Musician Annie-Rose Maloney won’t rehearse unless the whole band eats together first
Annie-Rose Maloney has a simple ethos when it comes to writing a song: it must have a pulse, it must feel nice to sing, and it must bear a truthfulness about our human experiences.
The seven songs on Circle Walking are all tethered by being grounded in deep truth, and came out “a bit like an exhale - I almost always cried when I wrote them.” It was written over many years without any set intention, songs often blooming subconsciously from a seed of a lyric, or melody line - “I tended to let things reveal themselves to me. Like an archaeologist uncovering a hidden and delicate treasure.” Circle Walking was recorded in a living room in Heidelberg in Naarm/Melbourne’s northeast with co-producer Tim Harvey (Aldous Harding, Jade Imagine, Lisa Mitchell), featuring Jess Ellwood on guitar and backing vocals from Angie McMahon, Ruby Gill and Olivia Hally (Oh Pep!) - a delicate, authentic and intentional formation which came together with Annie-Rose to build the album’s world, and carry out her intention to make an album that had as little interference in the recording process as possible; the instruments, voices, and even any mistakes made while recording are all honoured as they are, and swell together to create a record that feels electric, magical and buzzing in its realness.
